Breathe
easier and save energy
Home owners and office workers today are being stalked by silent and often invisible health menace - the indoor pollution. It can be as uncomplicated and easily remedied as pet hair mated on a soft chair or as insidious as the medical time bomb effects of cancer-causing asbestos, formaldehyde and smoke. Many scientists and researchers warn that pollution inside homes and office frequently reaches concentrations that would be illegal outdoors. Since the average person spends 75 to 90 percent of his or her time indoors, this is clearly a potential serious problem. In the interest of conserving energy, we insulate, weather strip and seal our buildings and add storm windows and doors. But these same energy conservation methods, which prevent energy loss, are sealing in pollutants which are odorless, invisible and sometimes highly dangerous. When pollutants are trapped, their concentrations increase and studies show this may increase the risk of allergic conditions, respiratory disease and physical inefficiency. In a typical "leaky" house, all the air is exchanged with fresh outdoor air about once an hour, but it may take ten times longer to completely replace the air in a well-sealed structure. Air in any enclosed space is polluted by the inhabitants and their activities. It may be caused by odors, pets, cleaning fluids, aerosol sprays, formaldehyde. Indoor pollution problems also are multiplied by air conditioning systems which help spawn germs, fungi, mold and mildew spores. Many appliances and office machines produce uncontrolled quantities of ozone. Carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen from cooking gas, fireplaces and furnaces add to the long list of health hazards.
